I’m again joining fellow Covenant House California board members, friends, and fellow business leaders in Los Angeles and the Bay Area who are sleeping on the street on November 16 for Covenant House California Sleep Out -- Executive Edition because, unlike our own children, kids in the foster care system, almost by definition, have gotten a rotten start to life. And then, upon turning 18, nearly 50% of them wind up on the dangerous streets of Los Angeles and other cities within six months of “emancipation” from the system where they join hundreds of other homless youth from California and across the country. That shouldn't be acceptable to any of us. Covenant House's goal is to eliminate homelessness in this at risk population, and to give these kids a shot at a productive life.
Each year in Los Angeles, Oakland, and 19 other cities across North America, Covenant House cares for over 50,000 at-risk and homeless kids in their journey from the street to safety and, ultimately, to independent, stable lives. Think about that number. Covenant House provides care to a basball stadium full of homeless kids each and every year, and works to transition them from the street and into self-sustaining, stable lives. Amazing.
By participating in the this year's Sleep Out I'm doing my small part to make sure CHC's doors stay open for all who need a meal and a safe place to sleep. It's with sincere pride that I take on this challenge alongside my friends and fellow business leaders in Los Angeles and across the country.
