I'm Sleeping Out.
I accept the challenge to Sleep Out with Covenant House. I'm not worried about a cold night on the streets. I was a foster youth that escaped from New York at age 16. I spent the terrible nights on the streets of Hollywood. I would not wish that upon anybody.
Thousands of kids spend each night on the unforgiving streets of Los Angeles. 98% of foster youth are thrown out of their homes as soon as they turn 18, because the government checks stop. That is the extent of the love in their childhood.
In 1986, I got a mailer from Covenant House saying it was trying to open a southern California location and was raising money in hopes of doing so. I was 20 years old and gave all I could...20 bucks. Since then, this has transformed into millions in giving and thousands of hours of effort.
I need your help getting kids off our streets. Friend-raising is as important as fundraising. Many of you have helped for years, while some of you are new. 20 bucks to $20,000 or more. Please help me. When you drive down the streets, you will see first-hand some of the lives you will be saving. Let's help them before they become chronic homeless or another sad statistic.
