This will be my second year Sleeping Out on a carboard box as a barrier from the pavement. I would put "sleep" in quotes because the reality is that it was cold and fear would re-occur through the night. It was life changing. All I could think about was how can one function in life like this? Go to work? Go to school?
I spoke about my experience in detail here https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/i-lost-everything-tomorrow-tessa-edison
Covenant House DC has put thier money raised to good use. Just this summer they had a ribbon cutting of CHW’s The Sanctuary (Overnight Respite Center) – providing youth with 10 emergency overnight beds and Rights of Passage III – providing transitional housing to youth seeking CHW’s supportive wrap-around services.
I accept the challenge again to Sleep Out with Covenant House. It will be uncomfortable. It will be dark. But for one night I can give up the comforts of home knowing that - by doing so - I can bring warmth and hope to young people who need it most.
Thousands of kids spend each night on the unforgiving streets of our great cities. Countless others are staying with relatives or friends, dreading the day when there is no one else to take them in. And one night can make a difference.
