My reason for sleeping out is that I live in the Central West End and encounter those who are hungry, homeless, and anxious on a daily basis as I walk through the neighborhood. Many of them self-identify as Veterans, which makes their plight all the more tragic. The reasons for this homelessness are complex, and the solution to this glaring hole in our safety net will be even more complex. Homelessness is exacerbated by mental, behavioral and physical illness, none of which are easy to address on their own. Yet, as a caring society committed to taking care of those who struggle to care for themselves, we cannot stop trying. While addressing the complex array of issues that surround homelessness will not be easy, one thing is certain. The solution will require the redistribution of significant resources.
So, I am making a minimal, symbolic sacrifice of sleeping outdoors on one potentially cold night to shine a light on the difficult lives of those forced to sleep out every night of the year. You can join me in this effort by helping me to achieve my goal of raising $5,000 for Covenant House. At Ascension, part of our mission is to advocate for a more just and compassionate society. This is my extremely minor, symbolic effort to do so.
