On November 7th I will be joining the boys of St Joseph Regional HS in sleeping out for the homeless teens of Covenant House for my sixth consecutive year. For me, this is a priviledge, an evening that is moving, cold and uncomfortable, that brings together my two worlds – the boys of St Joe’s and the teens of Covenant House. In some ways they couldn’t be more different, and yet in many ways, they have so much in common. Each year, before heading outside for the night, we break into groups and the boys of St Joe’s get to meet the teens from Covenant House. Theyhave heard how a homeless teen has to find a safe place to sleep each night, how hard it is to keep warm during the winter, how challenging it is to find food. At first, it seemed the boys from St Joe’s lives were vastly different. But the more they spoke and shared their dreams and interests, they realized that, while there were significant differences in their daily lives, at the same time, they were a lot alike – teens, who liked music, who wanted to hang with their friends, wanted to feel they belonged, wanted to feel loved. For the Joe’s boys, it was a profound moment when they realized, but by the grace of God, their lives could have been as difficult. And isn’t that true for all of us?
One of the things that makes our Sleepout so special is that teens of similar ages come together and truly understand that they have all been blessed by the other’s participation: the Joe’s boys touched by the stories of the Covenant House teens, and the Covenant House teens so appreciative of what the Joe’s boys are doing for them.
I realize you get asked to help many worthy charities, and probably get to asked to help Covenant House a number of times throughout the year, yet I would feel honored if you would join me in The St Joe’s Sleepout and donate to Covenant House so together, we can help the homeless teens they serve. Through the use of this Giving Page I’m sure you will find donating quite easy.
Please know, that while I am “sleeping” in the cold on November 7th, in addition to praying for the homeless teens throughout our country, I’ll also be saying a prayer of thanks for you and your support.
God Bless - John
