Why I'm Sleeping Out
With the recent violence and blood shed here at home and abroad, I am outraged and energized to LOVE as hard as I can.I'm Back! and Honored to be a part of the Broadway community as we step up to this worthy cause with our hearts wide open. These extraordinary kids of Covenant House continue to feed my soul. Thank you for helping me help them.

Some years ago my friend and composer Neil Berg asked me to sing in a concert to benefit Covenant House in Newark, New Jersey. At that time I had heard of Covenant House and knew it was a homeless shelter for young people so without hesitation I said yes. I showed up on the day for sound check/rehearsal and spent most of the time in the green room with the young residents of the shelter chatting and getting to know them. I was so moved by their stories and struck by their resilience in the face of so much adversity that I knew I wanted to participate in the concerts annually. I asked Neil Berg to please let me know the dates as early as possible so I could put them in my schedule.
Fast forward to 2010. I received a letter from Kevin Ryan, president of Covenant House International, asking me to consider joining the board of directors. Unbeknownst to me, he had observed me in the green room spending time with the residents and noticed how the kids gravitated towards me and I towards them. He wanted my heart and soul on the board and I said yes, absolutely I would love to join.
Thanks to Neil Berg and many Broadway performers we have done many benefit concerts for Covenant House and continue to be inspired by these young people. This is the most important work I do. Believe me I get much more than I could ever give, my heart is stretched wider and deeper than I ever thought possible. Covenant House is one of the joys of my life.
