I'll be the first to admit, I have preconceived biases of what it means to be homeless. I've hesitated (or refused) to give someone on the street money because I assumed they would use it for drugs or alcohol. I know that sometimes I assume the worst as my way of rationalizing the helplessness I feel about being able to make a difference. On top of that, there's the guilt I feel about being privileged with a warm bed and a roof over my head each night.
A good friend of mine told me about an incredible organization that totally changed my perspective about homelessness. The Covenant House serves runaway, homeless and trafficked youth throughout the Philadelphia area with absolute respect and unconditional love. When she first told me about the organization, my first reaction was “What do you mean there are kids sleeping on the streets each night?” In my head that didn’t fit the picture of the unshowered, drug addict that made a series of bad decision that led to homelessness. I was overwhelmed with emotions and images of kids who ended up on the street as a result of terrible family circumstances or trafficking. It was truly eye opening, and from that moment, I knew I needed to get involved.
On March 24, I’m accepting the challenge to Sleep Out (yes, outside on the street) with Covenant House. It will be uncomfortable. It will be dark. But for one night I can give up the comforts of home knowing that – by doing so – I can bring warmth and hope to young people who need it most.
I know that it can be hard to decide which cause or organization to support with your dollars--especially when everyone seems deserving, so let me tell you what your money can do for the kids at Covenant House.
- $25 covers the cost of one week of diapers and wipes for babies living at the shelter
- $50 provides a homeless kid at Covenant House with a week of nutritious meals
- $100 provides crisis care to a brave kid that walks through the front door
- $275 ensures medical care for one teenager or young adult
No matter the size of your donation, the value of it to these kids who have so little is enormous.
